Gold is a Choice Metal for Jewelry
Gold is a rare and precious metal. It is a popular choice for fine jewelry because it is versatile, timeless and beautiful. Gold also resists rust and corrosion, making it ideal for everyday wear.
Purity of Gold
Pure gold is too soft for jewelry. To increase its strength and prevent bending, another metal is added to pure gold. The combination is called an "alloy." The amount of gold present in a piece of jewelry is noted in karats, not to be confused with "carats," which is used for gemstones. 24-karat gold is pure gold. 18-karat gold is 75 percent gold (18/24) and 25 percent other metals. 14-karat gold is 58.3 percent gold (14/24) and 41.7 percent other metals.
Much of the fine jewelry in the Sidney Thomas collection is crafted in 18-karat and 14-karat gold, ideal choices for beauty and durability. All of the pieces in our collection are hallmarked to guarantee their gold content.
Some of our contemporary fine jewelry is plated with gold to create a beautiful, modern and affordable piece. If that is the case, it will be noted in the item's description. Here is an example of a gold-plated description: "Bracelet in 18-karat gold over Sterling Silver."
Color of Gold
Pure yellow gold is most often mixed with copper, silver or a combination of the metals to create 18-karat and 14-karat yellow gold.
To create white gold, pure gold is mixed with metals that are naturally white, including palladium, nickel, and zinc. White gold is often plated with rhodium to enhance its whiteness.
Over time, a piece of white gold jewelry may need to be re-plated which is a common process. Be sure to have a trusted jeweler, like Sidney Thomas, re-plate your fine jewelry.
To give pure gold a rosy hue, copper is added to create rose gold, also known as pink gold.
Gold Jewelry Care
Chemicals including chlorine and other cleaning agents can damage gold. Protect your gold jewelry by taking it off and storing it in a safe place when working with chemicals. Also avoid wearing your gold jewelry in swimming pools. Clean your gold jewelry with a mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth. Storing gold jewelry in a box with other loose jewelry can cause abrasions. We recommend storing a piece of gold jewelry in its Sidney Thomas presentation box.
